Quantitative reasoning
Also called GMAT Quant · QR · GRE Quant
No. GRE Quantitative Reasoning is a different scale (130–170), section-level adaptive, and allows an on-screen calculator. GMAT QR is item-adaptive inside the section, Problem Solving only, and calculator-free. Geometry is largely gone from the current GMAT; GRE still includes it. Do not read a GRE 168 as a GMAT QR 85.
Quantitative reasoning (QR) on the current GMAT is a 45-minute, 21-question Problem Solving section that tests arithmetic and elementary algebra applied to problems, not advanced math. It scores 60–90 and counts equally with Verbal and Data Insights toward the 205–805 total. There is no on-screen calculator (mba.com content; mba.com structure).
Is GMAT Quant the same as GRE Quant?
What QR measures on the GMAT
| Feature | Current GMAT QR | GRE Quant | Source / date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Questions / time | 21 in 45 minutes | Two sections, 12 then 15 | mba.com / ETS |
| Scale | 60–90 | 130–170 | GMAC / ETS |
| Calculator | No | Yes | mba.com / ETS |
| Weight in total | Equal third of 205–805 | Own 130–170 score | GMAC / ETS |
GMAC’s content page says answering correctly relies on logic and analysis, not on the underlying math skill alone. Data Sufficiency, which used to live in Quant, now sits in Data Insights. A high QR with a weak Data Insights score still pulls the total down by a third.
Example: QR 84, Verbal 82, Data Insights 72. The total is dragged by DI, not by “quant.” Prep time belongs on tables and multi-source items, not on another algebra drill set. A 10th Edition Quant 49 is not a current QR 84 without concordance; those section scales differ.
Common errors
- Bringing GRE calculator habits into GMAT QR
- Treating Data Insights as “the real quant” and skipping QR
- Comparing a 10th Edition Quant 51 to a current 90 as if both were out of 51
- Assuming a STEM degree makes QR optional at a test-required school
FAQ
Does GMAT Quant include geometry?
The current QR section is built on arithmetic and elementary algebra. GMAC’s content page does not list geometry as a QR domain the way older guides did. GRE Quant still includes geometry. If your practice book is pre-Focus, check the question types before you spend weeks on circles.
How much does QR affect the GMAT total?
One equal third. GMAC weights Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights the same in the 205–805 total. A 90 in QR cannot hide a 70 in Data Insights. Section scores are 60–90 in one-point steps, and all three feed the 205–805 total equally.
Should I take GRE if my algebra is rusty?
Only if GRE Quant, with a calculator and some geometry, matches how you actually score in practice. Rusty algebra on GMAT QR is a prep problem, not an automatic reason to switch tests. Sit timed practice on both before you pay for a registration.
