Optional practical training
Also called OPT · post-completion OPT · pre-completion OPT
Only if post-completion OPT is recommended, timely filed, and approved — and only if the student did not already spend the 12 months. Full-time pre-completion OPT burns the bank one-for-one. Twelve months or more of full-time CPT at this degree level eliminates OPT entirely. A 52.0201 MBA does not get STEM OPT's extra 24 months.
Optional practical training (OPT) is temporary F-1 work directly related to the major. USCIS may authorize up to 12 months at each higher education level, before completion, after, or both. Pre-completion time is deducted. Work starts only after Form I-765 is approved and the student holds an EAD (USCIS OPT page).
Is the MBA automatically 12 months of work after graduation?
Only if post-completion OPT is recommended, timely filed, and approved — and only if the student did not already spend the 12 months. Full-time pre-completion OPT burns the bank one-for-one. Twelve months or more of full-time CPT at this degree level eliminates OPT entirely. A 52.0201 MBA does not get STEM OPT’s extra 24 months.
OPT vs CPT vs STEM OPT
| Benefit | When | Who authorizes | Length | Source / date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CPT | During the program | DSO on I-20 | Per employer / course | ICE |
| Post-completion OPT | After program end | USCIS EAD | 12 months per level | USCIS |
| STEM OPT | After OPT starts | USCIS EAD | 24-month extension | USCIS / DHS list |
Post-completion OPT must be at least 20 hours per week. Unemployment on initial OPT is limited to 90 days. Cap-gap can extend F-1 work when a timely H-1B petition and change of status are selected, usually through October 1.
Example: May graduate, no pre-completion OPT, no 12-month full-time CPT, I-20 CIP 52.0201. She can use 12 months of OPT. She cannot file the 24-month STEM extension on that CIP.
Common errors
- Starting work after the DSO signature but before the EAD
- Assuming the MBA brand is STEM OPT-eligible
- Treating 12 months of full-time CPT as harmless
- Counting the 60-day F-1 grace period as extra work time
FAQ
Does OPT equal permanent work authorization?
No. CSEA permanent work authorization for a U.S. school means citizens and permanent residents. OPT is time-limited F-1 employment authorization.
Should I use pre-completion OPT for a summer internship?
Usually no. It spends the post-MBA bank. CPT is the in-program tool.
Can I work while I-765 is pending?
Not on initial OPT. A timely STEM extension filing can automatically extend work 180 days; that rule does not create initial OPT.
Does a new master’s reset the 12 months?
USCIS authorizes 12 months per higher level of study. A prior bachelor’s OPT does not spend the MBA-level grant.
