Continuous improvement review

Also called CIR · AACSB CIR · fifth-year review

Annual work does not stop: refresh the strategic plan and file Business School Questionnaire modules. At mid-cycle the school submits a CIR application (AACSB's review page uses 1 September three years before the visit; the six-year transition page also cites 1 July in year three). That application now includes societal impact, faculty qualifications, strategy, and assurance of learning so staff can flag risk early. No later than 60 days before the visit, the CIR report goes in through myAccreditation. A peer-review team visits. CIRC oversees consistency of recommendations.

Continuous improvement review (CIR) is AACSB’s process for schools that already hold accreditation. From visits on 1 July 2026, the cycle is six years, not five. AACSB describes CIR as consultative: mission, strategy, and improvement since the last visit, not a line-by-line re-audit of every standard. You still have to be in alignment. The consultative tone is not a waiver.

What happens in the six-year cycle?

Annual work does not stop: refresh the strategic plan and file Business School Questionnaire modules. At mid-cycle the school submits a CIR application (AACSB’s review page uses 1 September three years before the visit; the six-year transition page also cites 1 July in year three). Teams still read faculty tables, AoL evidence, and the website’s scope claims. “Consultative” means the report is organized around engagement, innovation, impact, and the school’s own plan, not that Standard 3 is optional. A school that drifted under 40 percent SA will hear about it in CIR language.

Example: visit year is 2028–29. CIR application is due in 2025–26. CIR report is due 60 days before the team arrives. A dean who starts the report the semester of the visit is already late. The mid-cycle application is the moment to confess a faculty hole, not the airport pickup.

How is CIR different from initial accreditation and from “maintenance”?

Initial accreditation is the first climb, with a mentor and iSER/SER. CIR is the continuation process. “Maintenance of accreditation” is the older AACSB name for the same continuation idea, and still the phrase other bodies use. EQUIS re-evaluates every three to five years. IACBE’s award runs up to seven years. Do not import those calendars into an AACSB planner.

Common errors

  • Writing a CIR report as a second initial SER, standard by standard, and missing the school’s actual strategy story.
  • Treating the five-year habit as still in force for visits after 1 July 2026.
  • Ignoring the mid-cycle CIR application, then discovering scope and SA problems in the visit year.
  • Calling CIR a “fifth-year review” in current documents.

FAQ

Why did AACSB move CIR from five years to six?

AACSB announced the change as a cycle transition effective with visits on 1 July 2026, postponing many 2026–27 visits by a year. The CIR application was expanded to function as a mid-cycle risk report. Read your accreditation manager’s letter for your date. Do not keep a five-year Gantt chart.

Is CIR easier than initial accreditation?

It is different. There is no mentor and no iSER ladder. The team expects a mature system and a record of improvement against the last report’s concerns. Schools that treated the first award as the finish line often find CIR harder, because the evidence window is the whole cycle.

What is CIRC?

The Continuous Improvement Review Committee. It oversees continuation of business accreditation, consistency across teams, and equity of recommendations. Peer-review team recommendations do not become final because the team chair was friendly at dinner. CIRC (and then AACSB governance) has to concur.
