Practice academic

Also called professional academic · PA · practice academics · Practice Academic

The doctorate (or other accepted terminal degree) gets the person in the door, usually with a five-year initial window similar to SA. After that, the school's written PA criteria have to specify depth: consulting of real responsibility, corporate boards, professional-standard setting, paid practice, executive-education that is not just a guest lecture. Sitting on one advisory board and forwarding LinkedIn posts is not a portfolio. Interpretive guidance is explicit that publication is optional at the AACSB level.

Practice academic (PA) is AACSB’s qualification class for faculty who normally hold a terminal degree related to their teaching field and who stay current through professional engagement, not through a research pipeline. Searchers often say “professional academic”; the standards say Practice Academic. Standard 3 does not require a PA to publish. Schools may add a publication rule in their own criteria. AACSB will not.

What counts as sustaining PA status?

The doctorate (or other accepted terminal degree) gets the person in the door, usually with a five-year initial window similar to SA. After that, the school’s written PA criteria have to specify depth: consulting of real responsibility, corporate boards, professional-standard setting, paid practice, executive-education that is not just a guest lecture. Sitting on one advisory board and forwarding LinkedIn posts is not a portfolio. Interpretive guidance is explicit that publication is optional at the AACSB level.

PA exists so a school can keep a former CFO, a recently tenured scholar who has moved into practice, or an MD teaching health-care management, without pretending they are still running a journal pipeline. If that person also publishes, they may meet SA instead. Classify by the engagement the school actually requires and the person actually does, not by the title on the office door.

Example: a strategy professor earned a PhD in 2012, has no peer-reviewed article since 2018, and spends 40 percent of load on a funded industry clinic. Under a typical school policy that is PA, not SA. Counting them as SA to hit the 40 percent floor is a Table 3-1 problem the peer-review team will find by reading CVs.

How is PA different from SA, SP, and IP?

SA is scholarship. PA is a terminal degree plus practice. SP is a practitioner who also produces scholarship. IP is a practitioner who teaches and stays current in practice without a research expectation. PA and SA share the doctorate. SP and IP usually do not.

People search “professional academic” because PA looks like it should expand that way. In an iSER or CIR report, write Practice Academic (PA). Using “professional academic” in AACSB tables reads as a school that has not opened Standard 3.

Common errors

  • Labeling every non-publishing doctorate as PA with no documented practice work.
  • Requiring PAs to meet the SA article quota “just in case.”
  • Confusing PA with IP because both engage practice.
  • Changing a fading SA to PA the semester before the visit without a criteria trail.

FAQ

Is “professional academic” an official AACSB category?

No. The four classes are Scholarly Academic, Practice Academic, Scholarly Practitioner, and Instructional Practitioner. “Professional academic” is a common misremembering of PA. Use Practice Academic in documents. This glossary keeps the search slug because that is what people type.

Can a PA count toward the 40 percent SA minimum?

No. The 40 percent test is SA only. PA counts toward the 90 percent qualified mix (SA+PA+SP+IP). A school that is heavy PA and light SA can look professionally engaged and still miss Standard 3.2 on the SA floor, especially in a degree-granting discipline.

Must PAs hold a PhD?

Normally a terminal degree related to the teaching field. Interpretive guidance allows other terminals (JD, MD, and similar) when the teaching match and engagement match. A master’s-only executive is IP or SP, not PA, however distinguished the career.
