Other guaranteed compensation

Also called guaranteed year-end bonus · guaranteed bonus · other guaranteed

Table 4.A has two blocks: base salary and signing / starting bonus. Instruction 6 says the start bonus is the amount paid for joining, "not any subsequent guaranteed bonus." Instruction 7 keeps stock, tuition reimbursement, commissions, and relocation out. Instruction 2 says do not combine the two required categories into a total-compensation figure.

Other guaranteed compensation is the pay an offer letter promises beyond base and the start bonus — usually a guaranteed first-year or year-end bonus. CSEA Edition VII does not give it a required table. Schools that still print it (Yale’s “median guaranteed year-end”) are adding a labeled extra, not following a CSEA column.

Why the Standards skip it

Table 4.A has two blocks: base salary and signing / starting bonus. Instruction 6 says the start bonus is the amount paid for joining, “not any subsequent guaranteed bonus.” Instruction 7 keeps stock, tuition reimbursement, commissions, and relocation out. Instruction 2 says do not combine the two required categories into a total-compensation figure.

That leaves a hole in the offer letter. Banking and some consulting letters still print a guaranteed year-end number. Corporate letters sometimes print a guaranteed first-year bonus that is not the sign-on. Older MBA CSEA editions and many school PDFs called that stack “other guaranteed compensation.” Edition VII stopped requiring it because the item is uneven across industries and easy to confuse with a discretionary bonus.

Yale SOM 2025 is the clean extra-exhibit version: median base $175,000, median signing bonus $30,000, median guaranteed year-end $40,000 — and only 5.5% of salary reporters received that year-end guarantee. A reader who adds 175 + 30 + 40 = 245 is describing a rare package, not the class.

Example: an IBD letter lists $175k base, $50k sign-on, $50k guaranteed first-year bonus. CSEA Table 4.A takes $175k and $50k. The second $50k is “other guaranteed” if the school collects it. A tech letter lists $165k base, $30k sign-on, $40k RSUs over four years. Those RSUs are not other guaranteed compensation in the cash sense CSEA was trying to isolate.

Do not cash-out benefits, a car, or a housing allowance and drop them in this bucket. Edition VII forbids equating perquisites to cash in the compensation report.

Common errors

Adding this line to every graduate’s package. Treating a discretionary target bonus as guaranteed. Calling RSUs “other guaranteed.” Assuming CSEA still requires the column. Using a 5% receipt rate as if it were a class median.

FAQ

Is a guaranteed year-end bonus a signing bonus?

No. CSEA’s glossary: signing / starting bonus is the amount received upon starting, not any subsequent guaranteed bonus. Year-end money that will be paid after you have been working is the “other” line, if the school tracks it at all.

Why do only a few graduates have this?

Most MBA offers either pay a discretionary bonus (consulting performance bonus, corporate AIP) or pay equity. A true guarantee is a banking and occasional consulting habit. Yale’s 5.5% receipt rate is the base rate, not an outlier school.

If CSEA forbids total compensation, why do blogs add it?

Market guides (GMAC, Management Consulted) describe what a first-year employee might earn if every line hits. That is a product comparison, not a Standards table. The required public file still splits base and sign-on so one-time cash does not masquerade as salary.

Should I use this in ROI?

Only as a sensitivity, named as a one-year guarantee with its receipt rate. Do not treat a $40k guaranteed bonus as $40k of recurring income in year two.
