Function placement

Also called professional function · job function

Usually no. That phrase is industry. Amazon operations and Amazon product management share an industry row and split on function. Table 4.B headings include Accounting, Business/Data Analytics, Consulting, Finance, General Management, HR, Marketing/Sales, IT, Operations/Logistics, Product Management, Other, and Function Not Reported. Class of 2026 updates lifted Product Management and Business Analytics to heading level.

Function placement is the CSEA count of full-time MBA graduates who accepted jobs in a professional function by three months after graduation. It is the job’s work, not the employer’s industry. Consulting at a tech firm is consulting. Schools report headcount, percent, and base salary when cells clear the floor (CSEA Edition VII).

Is “tech placement” a function?

Population: seekers who accepted new full-time jobs by three months. Sponsored returners are Not Seeking. Salary publishes at the greater of three salary points or 1% of seekers. Smaller cells go to Other or I/D. Do not split function salaries by visa.

Example: 180 seekers, 50 consulting (27.8%), consulting salary n = 45, median base $190,000. A real-estate function with two salaries does not publish a median. Folding those two into Finance to “make the cell” mislabels the work.

Common errors

  • Using employer brand to assign function (Amazon is not a function)
  • Publishing function medians on two salaries
  • Re-breaking function pay by visa
  • Counting internships converted after three months without a contemporaneous accept

FAQ

Do function percents use seekers or accepters?

Table 4.B is graduates accepting new employment. Percents should sum to 100% of that group, including Function Not Reported.

Can we publish a consulting signing-bonus median on 4.B?

CSEA’s function table is base salary. Signing bonus is a separate type on Table 4.A. Do not stack them as total compensation.

What if a graduate has two functions?

Pick the primary role on the offer. Dual hats belong in one row.

Is product management a heading now?

Yes, for Class of 2026 / Edition VII. It is no longer only a marketing sub-function.
